The first thing you want to do is to make sure that you are doing a good bit of researching. Paid jobs in the world of farming can be extremely hard to come by. This may be because there are a lot of people looking for the same kind of work or it could be because a lot of farming jobs are taken by family members of the farm owner as there is a lack of funds to hire outside help. This is not to say that there are no such jobs out there, it is just that they are going to be a little hard to find.
One of the first things you could do would be to decide just what type of area you would like to specialize in. As you will soon see in your research, the field of agriculture really encompasses a wide range of areas. There is forestry, wildlife protection, watersheds, and propagation along with numerous other things. The more you know about what all is out there, the more you will understand what you will need to know and have in order to find the work you are looking for.
Believe it or not, you will need a professional resume and cover letter when you apply for farming jobs. This is an internship and it should be treated as such, even if it for a job where you will be dirty and smelly more than clean and fresh. Many high schools and colleges offer free services that will create an error free resume for you to use. Do not think that you can skip out on this part because your application will end up finding itself in the back of the file cabinet simply because it was without the resume and cover letter that all of the other applications had.
After you have sent out all of your applications, you will want to make sure that you are taking advantage of the waiting period before you hear from someone about the possibility of summer employment. You should practice going through an interview with a friend or someone from your family. Try to think of the various questions that will be asked during the interview and try to think of creative ways to answer the questions, while ensuring that you are giving the interviewer everything he or she needs to make a hiring decision.
If you are lucky enough to know someone who currently works in agriculture or at least used to, you will want to seek out his or her advice about the interview process. This way, should you get a call for an interview, you will know exactly what to expect and you will be completely prepared.
Remember, your interview is your first and last chance at actually obtaining the job. You need to make sure that you are presenting yourself in a respectable manner. You want to appear professional and extremely well prepared. The more prepared you are, the better shot you have at getting the job. You might find that you will be asked to have the interview over the phone. Even if this is the case, you will want to make sure that you are still looking your best. When you do this, you will be in a much more professional state of mind which will be picked up on by the person on the other end of the phone. Behave your best and make sure that you are making sure that you are using correct speech patterns and manners.
Even though at times you will feel as though this whole thing is nothing more than a shot in the dark, if you are well prepared you will have a chance at getting a job, even if it is nothing more than a low paid internship.
